Life Lessons

The Wahlmark Girls

Hope Licciardello

It’s mom here! And because of that I have one fuzzy photo to prove I was in the NICU today and honestly, I have no idea how to upload a photo anyways so I apologize for all those who visit just for the adorable photos :)

Dad had to go back to State College to make the donuts so it was all about the Wahlmark girls today. I was able to help with care time and spend over an hour doing kangaroo care with each sweetie.

Sammi is our wiggle worm! There have been 5 separate occasions when I’ve come into the NICU and find multiple nurses around her incubator laughing, “How did you do that?” “Where are you trying to go?” “Wow, she is a Houdini” She manages to get out of all types of soft constraints designed to keep her tucked in and emulating the womb as much as possible but she always manages to break out! There have been times she rolls towards the portholes and her diaper has come off! Tiny but fierce definitely describes this one, she’s gonna give us a run for our money.

Josie is our cuddle bug, she loves being tucked in and as soon she is placed on my chest she settles in immediately. When we do kangaroo care the nurse notes that her respiratory rate improves so for those who require empirical evidence that this therapy works, here is one more example.  She is steadily gaining weight and even though she is still so tiny she feels sturdier than her sister (there is a 9 oz gap) I’m chalking this up to that fact that Sammi is burning too many calories with all her escape attempts!

I am so looking forward to holding them at the same time and reintroducing them.
